Thomas L. Murray Jr., a distinguished law enforcement officer, entrepreneur, community leader, and beloved family man, peacefully transitioned on June 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and sons at the age of 87.

Born on October 30, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio to the late Thomas L. Murray, Sr. and Inez Murray. In his early years, he relocated to Newark, New Jersey, where he began laying the foundation for a legacy defined by public service, trailblazing leadership, and vibrant community engagement.  

At the age of 26, Tom joined the Newark Police Department in 1963. He was a member of the Newark Police Bronze Shield Organization, established in 1959 to combat racial discrimination within the department. During his time with the organization, he served with distinction as both Vice President and Secretary, championing equality, accountability, and unity within the ranks. His passion for unity also extended into recreation – he founded the organization’s first Bronze Sheild basketball team, personally funding and providing their uniforms.

In 1969, Tom was promoted to Detective in Internal Affairs, where he served with distinction until his retirement from the department in 1981. His contributions to both the Newark Police Department and the Bronze Sheild were a powerful reflection of his integrity, discipline, and deep commitment to justice.

Outside of law enforcement, Tom was a man of many talents. He became the proud owner of The Hollywood Lounge, one of Newark’s most celebrated nightlife venues of its time. There, he welcomed and entertained celebrity friends including Esther Rolle, Fred Williamson, Jim Brown – to name a few- and a host of local and state politicians and civic leaders. Due to his extensive knowledge of the liquor business and his success as a bar owner, Tom later served as Commissioner of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

Always drawn to the arts, Tom pursued a career in acting, making appearances in several notable films including Claudine, Serpico, Kojak, Amazing Grace, and Strike Force. His magnetic presence extended even further – he was also a gifted athlete who played semi-professional football with the Boontoon Bears of New Jersey in 1971.

After his retirement from Newark PD, Tom’s unwavering dedication to service led him to Florida, where he continued his law enforcement journey. He initially worked with Barkley Security Agency, Inc holding the position of Colonel. His passion led him back to Law Enforcement, where he became a Lieutenant and Code Enforcement Officer in the Quincy Police Department. Following his retirement from Quincy Police Department his passion for service led him to the Midway Police Department as Sergeant, Lieutenant and he proudly served as the Chief of Police for the City of Midway. After serving as Chief of Police, he continued his commitment to public service by joining the Gadsden County Sheriff Office as a Reserved Deputy where he ultimately concluded his professional career.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Iula Murray; sons, Thomas L. Murray III (Raishawn) and Trevor Murray; daughter, Tomeeko Hunt; numerous grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved children, Terrell L. Murray and LaSonja Renee Murray, and his granddaughter, Krystalin Alexis Murray- whom he loved deeply and carried in his heart always. Tom’s legacy of love, leadership, and resilience will continue to inspire generations to come.

Homegoing services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Tabernacle Church of Christ Written in Heaven, Gretna, FL, with burial to follow at Greensboro Community Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Bradwell Mortuary, Quincy, FL.
