John “Scott” Houston was born on May 20, 1930 to Robert P. Houston Sr. and Agnus Atwater Houston in Quincy, Florida. John was educated through the Gadsden County school system where he attended Pine Grove and Steven High School. On November 1, 1954, he enlisted into the military (Army). During his tour of duty, he served as an Infantrymen Soldier for two years. Upon completion of his military obligation, he enrolled at Lincoln Vocation Tech. School in Tallahassee, Florida where he studied masonry. In the St. Hebron community and Tri-County areas, he has displayed his craft of masonry through the development of numerous landmarks such as Florida A & M University, Florida State University, Leon County Civic Center, Florida State Hospital and maybe even the home you are currently residing.
In 1945 John accepted the Lord as his “Lord and Savior” under the leadership of Rev. Hackley. As an inspirational leader in St. Hebron AME Church, he serves on various boards and organizations (Class Leader, Steward, etc.). Throughout his Christian experiences he served under the leadership of numerous pastors (Hackley, McCormick, Simon, McGlocktin, Proctor, Hagen, Jefferson, Hardy and Riley). John, along with other family and community members were also instrumental in the reconstruction of the current St. Hebron AME Church’s sanctuary. His spiritual commitment allowed him to reach out and touch other members of the community, offering sincere prayers of grace and healing. Not only did he BELIEVE, but he lived the life of a Christian.
On April 12, 1957, he married his lovely wife Irene W. Houston (2016). John is leaving loving memories with son John Houston Jr. (Mary D. Houston), grandchildren Jaya S. Houston (Valdosta, GA), Javon C. Houston (Jamal Massey - Orlando, Florida), Veranda Peoples (Tallahassee, Florida) and great-grandchildren Jaidin Houston and Jamiya Vickers (Quincy, Florida), and Harlei Joie Massey (Orlando) as well as a host of nieces and nephews. John was one of twelve siblings.
